Attack of the Sander, and Gamers' Diseases

You know, it is really hard to concentrate on making a website when it sounds like your house is being attacked by giant bumblebees (really just Granddad sanding the side of the house).Anyway, I was playing on my PS2 the other day and it got me thinking about the sorts of things that people that play video games frequently are exposed to. Things like...

Award Hoarding - The need to collect all the awards you get from achieving a high score, or similar, and you care how many sleepless nights it takes to get them.

Blurred Reality - The sort of sensation that little kids get where after watching a movie like Tarzan, think that they can jump long distances like from the couch to the dining room table. Usually not the case. I don't know if this happens with gamers, I just thought this one needed mentioning.

Cheataholism - An addiction to game cheats, possibly due to boredom or the frustration of getting stuck on a particular level. It may seem harmless using a cheat just once, but eventually this disease will get hold of you and you'll want to use more, resulting in the game losing its excitement. See Also: Walkthroughaholism.

Gamer's Bladder - When some people's adrenaline gets a little out of control and they have to go and relieve themselves about three times more often than usual.

IWS (Immediate Withdrawal Syndrome) - Immediate depression following being told to turn off the console after a 3+ hour session.

Noob Rage - The sudden frustration causing insulting of another player when they ask a question with a glaringly obvious answer.

OMLS (One More Level Syndrome) - As its name suggests, this is when people want to stop, but not before they finish the next level, or similar. Seen frequently in casinos. See Also: Repeatonosis.

Pollex Strain - Traditionally known as "sore thumbs", but I thought I might as well find the Medical Latin word for thumb and make it sound more professional. Put simply, this occurs when you have been using a traditional, game pad-style controller for too long.

Repeatonosis - When you have to complete a level or mission perfectly, and you'll restart the level as many times as you need, getting more and more frustrated with every attempt. See Also: OMLS.

Shorthand Development - When you decide to make up your own acronyms or abbreviated words, hoping e1 wl u/s them. It usually turns into a message that takes longer to converse because you have to explain all the created language.

Social Downgrading - In the extreme stages of gaming addiction, social downgrading occurs when your social life, family, etc. gets pushed down underneath gaming on the priority ladder. Very serious if not dealt with.

Square Eyes - Also called eye strain, this term is used frequently by Generation Xers, or so I've noticed, where eye strain occurs after looking at a TV or computer screen too long without suitable breaks. Usually coupled with headaches.

Sunlight Deficiency - Also a low Vitamin D level, this occurs when a gamer insists on a dark room or environment to concentrate, even during the day. Relatively self-explanatory.

Walkthroughaholism - An addiction to a game's walkthrough. In the early stages, a gamer may refer to it once, just to get past a particular level, but it will soon develop into relying on the walkthrough to get through the rest of the game. This results in lost excitement. See Also: Cheataholism.

So that's my current list of gamers' diseases. If I think of any more, I'll add them to any later posts. Feel free to add any in the comment section. Maybe I'll make a dictionary of them...
Bye for now!

What I'm watching - These people have too much spare time (7 part series).

Like these - esp s/hand and sunlight deficiency. Hopefully an afternoon spent doing comedy cricket will have saved you from that - at least for the next week.
