Oh? Everyone's over it already? Well, that's the price you pay for being strictly weekly...
In this post: Christmas, getting into the gaming industry, predictions for 2012, and more of the internet in bite-sized pieces.
So, a new year, new start, new things... let's talk about last year, then!
2011 - In 201.1 words (or fewer)
Ok start the counter... now.
In the early months in our part of the world we witnessed
the culmination of all things unlucky, an earthquakes hitting again in now quite
possibly the nation's most widely known city, Christchurch. Later our nation's image
was put in jeopardy by Rena, and a spectacular helicopter crash was caught on
camera.
In world news we had more flooding, more earthquakes, and two
notable yet infamous deaths of Osama bin Laden and Kim Jong-Il.
In sports we beat the French, and the London countdown clock
froze up temporarily.
In politics, John Key stayed where he was, Winston came back
to visit for another 3 years, the census was postponed and citizens decided
they liked MMP.
In technology and entertainment, Sony got hacked real bad and
denied it to start, and the Harry Potter series of movies came to a close.
In weather, a tornado cruised its way through the North
Shore, and the entire country enjoyed a token snow day.
And finally, cities around the world were occupied by
various groups proclaiming that they are the 99% of society. Power to the
people. Or something like that.
And that's 2011 in 201.1 words or less. Back to you in the
studio.
More on Christmas
"Is he daft?" I hear you think. Well... possibly, but let's not go into that now.
I wanted to take the time to quickly add in the stuff that didn't have time to go into the previous post, and I figured now might be a good time.
Firstly, Christchurch, you troopers. Being hit by another series of earthquakes just before Christmas can be morale-shattering, but thanks to New Zealand-stick-together-ness you're all pulling together and helping one another get through this ordeal. Good news, though, as it seems the epicentres are moving out to sea, which must mean the worst is over?...
Secondly, a big big big thank you to Julian at SEGA of America for sending me this Christmas card (toy not included)...For those wondering what was written in the card I must first explain that earlier in 2011 I wrote to them asking how someone like myself would get a foot in the door of the gaming industry. For those that are interested, I share with you the response:
My recommendation is to check www.gamasutra.com and research jobs you're interested in. Then find schools to support your learning and contact companies. If there is a will, there is a way!Earlier this year I also got a similar email from Chris at Capcom directing me to http://www.sloperama.com/advice.html.
So if you're aspiring to enter the gaming industry like myself, those would be the places to get started!
My predictions for 2012, or "stuff I'd like to see happen"
Brought to you by Wikipedia's "Predicted and scheduled events" section on the 2012 page
So amongst all the hubbub of stuff occurring around the mysterious date of December 21, which I'd like to say I do not want to happen, I'd like to toss in some stuff I'd like to see next year.
Granted, Massey University's student newspaper does something like this already, but I'd like to hope I can do this segment in a way that uses 100% less foul language and around 45% more sensibility.
January 31
Final Fantasy XII-2 has great graphics but is 99% cut-scenes.
February 29
Someone somewhere in the world screws something up really badly for forgetting it was a leap year.
April 6
Titanic 3D re-becomes the highest grossing move of all time.
May 20
People in the Northern Hemisphere that don't realise that a solar eclipse is happening think that the end of the world is happening already, around 7 months earlier than it should.
July 27
The BBC uses their amazing power around the United Kingdom and manages to replicate the scenes from Doctor Who's "Fear Her" episode, getting David Tennant to light the Olympic flame and causing an entire stadium crowd to disappear.
Winter
The entire country of New Zealand wishes for it to snow again, but are greatly disappointed.
November 13
See May 20, but for the Southern Hemisphere.
November 16
All non-fans are disappointed by the next Twilight movie, and ditch the series.
December 21-24
Nothing happens, and only around 60% of people bother to buy Christmas presents "in case it was a few days off".
And also, sometime this year...
Harold Camping gets another date wrong, changes his mind, and gets it wrong again.
LulzSec takes down the U.S. government website.
Apple will make an upgrade of one of their products that is thinner than before.
The leader of LulzSec gets found and arrested, 4chan shuts down in protest or something.
Gamers go overboard at midnight releases of next generation consoles.
Winston Peters ends up using a giant "YES" sign to talk to the press for some reason.
And finally...
Rebecca Black releases the best-selling music single of the year.
The Run 4 - Update
Only three team spots left!
The registration period has been extended to January 6, for all details and for registration please visit this post.
And now, more of the Internet in bite-sized pieces.
Largely anticipated, and now at least twice a year, DJ Earworm graces YouTube with his presence and presents us a mash-up of large proportions. As with the past 4 years under the series United State of Pop, here is the mix of the top 25 year-end singles on Billboard's 2011 chart.
And from "boom" to "broom"...
The following is the notice you get when a staff member at one of my Facebook friends' workplace accidentally causes a broom to be dropped in the oven...
And how about some news bloopers?
Well that's enough from me, enjoy the first days of 2012 and we'll see you next week!
