Blind Following The Blind

About two days ago a construction crew finally finished building a new bridge across Matatua Road. It's quite a nice bridge, actually. It now has footpaths on both sides, and a small garden on the northern side that you can look at while admiring the, uh... well, it's supposed to be a river, but don't let the murky-brown colour fool you!

Beginning construction around 3-4 months ago, a section of Matatua Road was blocked off, and vehicle traffic was diverted down a side street, deciding that pedestrians would be smart enough to use a temporary bridge that they set up a bit downstream. And guess what, we were (bet you were expecting a joke there, weren't you?). The original due date was "August 2009", which was probably code for 11:59:59pm on the 31st of August.

With the due date was looming, they had already constructed the bridge and paved one side, letting foot traffic through. The projected finish date was then extended to the 25th of September, and, being the honest workers they were, finshed the brdige and sealed it that day. Now all that was left was to remove the detour signs.

With the signs removed it was now up to the public to realise that they could cross the bridge. And hey, guess what, it took at least three days to get a reasonable traffic flow through. It was quite funny, actually. If you're driving down Matatua Road heading south and you don't see a "road closed" sign, what do you do? Follow the driver in front of you, of course, because they obviously know if the road works have finished or not.
