Yes, it's been a long wait, but per usual we save the best holidays until last, and just like that it's next year all over again.
Per usual the shops are already trying to exhaust your wallet so you can't break them on Boxing Day, which is when the sales really start to come out.
But according to the decorations at the mall, it's been Christmas since November. I know it's cliché but it seems that Christmas stuff comes out earlier every year, it's too commercial, blah blah blah...
It's been late night shopping over the last few days, right up until the 24th, but to be honest what's going to be left? According to figures from Paymark we've hit higher spending than last year.
Also, this was the year I decided not to wait until the last minute to buy things for everyone, instead it was really the last week, around the time between "we can get it in just before Christmas" and "Not until after New Year's, sorry".
Luckily, even after multiple shopping ordeals, everyone is sorted and accounted for.
Here's what I imagined Christmas shopping to be like:
- Come up with ideas for presents
- Shortlist presents
- Go shopping
- Buy presents
- Go back home
- Wrap presents
And here's what actually happened:
- Come up with zero ideas for presents
- Ask around for ideas for presents
- Shortlist presents
- Go shopping
- Come up with more ideas for presents
- Pass flash mob
- Look at prices
- Pass a brass band
- Get lunch
- Pass the brass band that have now relocated
- Look at prices
- Brass band has relocated again
- Go back home
- Come up with more ideas for presents
- Rewrite shortlist
- Go shopping
- Buy present
- Experience buyer's remorse instantly
- Go back home
- Come up with a better idea for a present
- Go shopping
- Find a present that didn't make it to the shortlist that's cheaper
- Think about it for several hours
- Go back home
- Realise you forgot someone on your list
- Ask for ideas
- Go shopping
- Avoid eye contact with Santa
- Buy present...
...let's just say it took a while. I think there were about five or six separate trips before I was sure I had everything. And it turned out I didn't.
Christmas for me will be spent at home, after which I'm going up to Rotorua for a friend's birthday. Bit unfortunate yes, considering the holiday it's competing with, but I've made sure to provide a present for both days.
It's not Christmas related, but here's a video to keep you company if you happen to be experiencing Mondayitis. But really, is anyone?
