Jennie waved goodbye to me,
as I went to Uni; but then...
as months went past I realised
her birthday! I've forgotten!
A sheepish email sent in April
asking for the date,
"I hope I haven't missed it yet..."
"No, there's still a one month wait."
Days ticked past even more,
focusing on tests,
or what to blog about each week
like, multicoloured vests.
A week before the special date,
"I think I'll make a call,
perhaps on skype she'll give a hint,
I don't have a clue at all!"
A smile seen on a webcam,
the microphone was working,
we talked about the holidays,
the question was still lurking.
Finally, I tried to say,
"so... your birthday's coming up..."
Trying to show I wasn't prepared,
but I think I still slipped up.
Jennie said "Go to moonpig;
you can send me a card, I'll wait."
But I couldn't stop saying "Oh no! They cost!"
She probably thought I was a cheapskate.
I couldn't recover from that low,
I hung up and said goodbye.
The next morning I got sent an email,
the basis of a cry.
"Oh no! I've really done it now!"
I thought, as I read the letter;
I should think of something soon,
to make this whole thing better.
I remember writing a poem last,
for her love of words,
"How can I possibly top that?" I thought.
The Arts weren't good to nerds.
I thought and thought and thought and thought,
and thought and thought and thought,
and thought and thought and thought and thought,
and thought and thought and thought.
(Sorry, that last paragraph is probably redundant.)
I eventually got an idea,
"Aha, last year she couldn't see
how wonderful her smile was,
with poetry from me!"
"So this year I'll write another."
I said with a grin.
"But now I'll add on something else,
it'll be an epic win!"
But there was a slight problem; I needed to find
content of some amount.
"Oh dear." I said, "I'll need to hack
my Dad's facebook account."
To sum it all, I finished the task
of celebrating her day.
Even though I might have broken
laws along the way.
Now cars and houses I have none
and cash I haven't many.
But the best things in life are free
so Happy Birthday Jennie.
