This week a resident in my hall turned 18. Flashback to my own 18th and we had a nice family brunch at Valentines. Now back to Saturday... where the usually mild-mannered crew here at McHardy went up and got the birthday guy floored. Then they went into town. Come Sunday morning they were back to studying. Boy we have some different ways of celebrating things.
Now that some government funding thing has been passed this year, Universities are getting a lot more selective with their students, since (and don't quote me on this) I think the funding is now proportional to the number of students passing papers, no longer the size of the student roll.
Which would explain two things... first, it's why Egmont court is only half full, and why some duty rounds are so painstakingly quiet. Heck, just to jazz up the round last night I got the number of a phone box nearby and waited for someone to walk past so I could freak them out by a ringing phone box. No one did, unfortunately. But it would've been awesome.
Speaking of awesome, everyone's most probably heard of he Pokémon series of games, I mean if you've read previous posts you'll see it being mentioned a fair few times. It has been a realisation of mine that the current uni mob is the generation that grew up with it. But that's a retrospective I'll save for 2013.
What the real point of that statement was that now there is a community (although mostly in Spanish) that actually takes images of the game cartridges, known as ROMs, and modifies, or 'hacks' them to create entirely new games. Unfortunately, yes, this is slightly un-legal, however most stay off the legal radar by simply being free to download and play.
If you don't see where I'm going with this, well, over the past few weeks Steve (mentioned from last year at uni) and I have being rallying ideas back and forth and have decided to take up the same challenge. Considering it a game programming challenge, it'll involve all sorts of challenges actual developers face: storyline, gameplay, interest, the programming itself, etc. Naturally it's something done in the background of actual university work, but it might just pay off in the future. So stick around and you just might see the finalised version of "Pokémon: Negative Zero"!
University work has been trundling along nicely... considering I've been on duty all weekend I've had to put up with late nights and early awakenings (followed by quickly going back to sleep). Of course waking up at 2 in the afternoon is not progress. We're working on it.
The Last Word
This week's website suggestion comes to us from an RA colleague, Megan who recently got a bag of what looked like absolutely random stuff. But I digress. 1 Day is a collection of New Zealand based websites that offer substantial deals for, you guessed it, one day only. Every noon they have three new deals, a t-shirt, a bottle of wine, vouchers for services and more, all ready to be snapped up. Oh and sorry to all our international viewers, they only go as far as Australia as far as I know. Check it out here.
And yet again I have reached my broadband limit so not a lot of videos have been traversed. But I did find this video illustrating the math found in nature. A very nice portfolio of animation and sound.
And that's me for another week... next time I'm trying to get the post out by Saturday morning, just as an experiment. That's right, it's coming earlier this week!
